PRIMARY CARE SPORTS MEDICINE PHYSICIANAlana Lund Waterford is a board certified family medicine physician with a certificate of added qualification in Sports Medicine. She is originally from Mesa, Arizona and graduated Cum Lade from Arizona State University with a degree in Microbiology. She received her medical degree from American University of Antigua. She completed her family medicine residency at Texas Tech Health Science Center of the Permian Basin in Odessa Texas. She then went on to complete her sports medicine fellowship at Texas Institute of Graduate Medical Education and Research with Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio.
Her passion for sports medicine started when she competed in Equestrian Jumping through junior high and high school and continued in her pursuit of her track career from high school into college. She was recruited to walk on, and later earned a scholarship, as a Pole Vaulter and Heptathlete on the Arizona State University Track team from 2004-2008. Her team won 3 Outdoor Pacific 10 titles and went on to win 3 Division 1 team national champion titles. Dr Waterford, along with her 2007 Women’s Arizona State Track Team, were inducted into the Arizona State University Hall of Fame in 2023.
Dr Waterford’s decision to become a physician was driven from her love for sports and passion to serve people and athletes of all ages and all disciplines. She views an athlete as not just a high school, college, or professional athlete – but any human trying to better themselves towards their goals in health and wellness.
She has a passion for health and wellness including extra training and certifications in sports nutrition. She works towards providing a non-operative and holistic approach when working with a patient’s acute or chronic aches, pains, or injuries. She takes great pride in treating each patient as an individual with their own individualized treatment plan. She aims to make sure that each patient understands their injury and treatment options as best as possible. Her goal is to get each athlete back to their sport or desired activity level safely and as quickly as possible. She enjoys working in a team atmosphere to provide well rounded care for all of her patients, which include orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and chiropractors.Dr Waterford regularly volunteers and covers several Texas PRCA Rodeos every year, starting in 2016. She has previously covered sporting events for San Antonio Rampage Hockey and San Antonio Spurs. She was previously a team physician for Tarleton State University, Trinity University, and St Mary’s University. She has covered high school sporting events since the pursuit of her medical degree.
In her personal life, she loves to spend time with her husband and love of her life, Kolton Fields, their beautiful daughter and corgi dog. She also enjoys leading an active lifestyle by regularly participating in group fitness/Crossfit workouts and Olympic weightlifting, as well as outdoor activities such as hiking and camping.
